"I would like to see some
views about the bil sao and the use of it.The way i am taught it is
used to block or jam a circular punch going to the head. But if you
are mistaken and the punch goes a few inches down you are open to
the attack."
IMHO, Bil is not a technique used in a specific
way such as you describe. It is ONE way of defense. Another might be
as simple as a step or stance... Wing Chun (As I have learned) is a
METHOD of fighting where one is provided with structures, ranges,
lines, SENSITIVITY, etc. that after much repitious training, provide
a method of fighting that takes no thought, your offense and defense
come from your subconsious.
For example, is Bong Sau a block
or a strike? It is taught in the beginning as a basic deflection,
but over time, develops into so much more."
"The problem
becomes more apparent in another technique we practice using bil
sao+high pak sao (above the bil sao) to block the same punch where
in addition to the previous you lose your guarding hand as well if
the punch lands a little lower. We use it in the lop sao too when the
parner sends circular punch to the head(and garn sao if the punch
goes to the body). So here is one more question.Does lop sao has
variation with circular punches or is ours modified?"
There
are millions of variations to Lop. I think that thinking that one
movement/structure is a technique to be used "against another" is a
fallacy. Wing Chun is NOT a technique based art (Hence the unique
beauty of Wing Chun).
Now I realize you are doing a drill
your instructor is haveing you learn. And the drill requires a
certain response to a certain input. These drills are VERY
important. But it is just a drill, providing you with certain
limited new concepts. However, these concepts are just the beginning
of your exploration of the art, they are not the "be all end all
technique of choice". As you progress in the art, your instructor
will continue to add new methods to your Lop Sau, Chi Sau, Pak Sau,
etc. that will begin to really open the possibilities of this art up
to you. | |
