The simple answer is no.
Most "schools" of Wing Chun do not have the tripodial. It is a
brutal training device and you have to have a lot of desire to
withstand the pain to go through it. The only branch of Wing Chun I
have ever seen to openly teach it is Sifu Leung. I have read that
Yip Man was awesome with Kicks. This is no doubt where he honed it
from. In my opinion after one has mastered the tripodial and merged
it with their hand movements, they are a formidial
opponent.
Next: The thing you saw was a training device to
hone your Batt Jamm Do skills on (butterfly swords) You cannot
really train it without a dummy. I was never taught it. I have been
told stories that Sifu Leung and two Hong Kong business men were
taught the Batt Jaam Do and no one is as good or as skilled with the
butterfly swords as Sifu Leung. He is the only one I have seen to
apply such a device and help promote the art. It makes sense. I was
just taught the Batt Jamm Do form I have no clue if you are supposed
to hit the sword dummy in a certain pattern or not. The tripodial
has a form with it. Batt Jamm do has a form with it. But once again
I have no clue bif the butterfly sword dummy has a form with it.
Sifu Leung can give a definate answer. Doc Ed or some of the other
posters who sometimes post here would know the answer better than
I.
Hope this helps and best wishes always,
Victor
