You seem by your words to be an open
minded martial artists and said you have praticed Hung Gar before
studying Wing Chun.
I am just wondering what attracted you to
wing chun? I mean there were many styles to choose from in Hong Kong
and if there were all good according to you, then what made you
think yup wing chun is for me?
I TRAINED IN DIFFERENT MARTIAL
ARTS FROM THE AGE OF SEVEN. BRUCE LEE AND I WERE FRIENDS AND I USED
TO REGULARLY DEFEAT HIM WHEN WE SPARRED UNTIL ONE DAY -- I HAD NOT
SEEN HIM FOR A FEW MONTHS -- I COULDN'T STOP HIM OR COME NEAR HIM.
IT TURNED OUT THAT SINCE I HAD LAST SEEN HIM, HE HAD BEEN LEARNING A
STYLE CALLED WING CHUN (WHICH UNTIL THEN, I HAD NEVER HEARD OF). I
WAS IMPRESSED, HE TOOK ME TO HIS TEACHER, YIP MAN, AND THAT WAS HOW
I CAME TO BE INVOLVED WITH WING CHUN IN THE 1950S.
I was just
curious to know more about your mindset at that time period. I have
noticed that even tho wing chun students in hong kong didnt have to
fight western boxers and/or kick boxers, your wing chun does have
some techniques against these kinds of attacks. Did Yip Man teach
you these techniques or did you use your own concepts learned from
Yip Man to create these techniques?
WING CHUN THEORY AND
TECHNIQUES ALLOW ONE TO COUNTER ANY TYPE OF ATTACK, INCLUDING
WESTERN BOXING, KICK BOXING, THAI BOXING, ETC., USING TWO HANDS AND
TWO LEGS. THE KEY IS WHETHER ONE UNDERSTANDS THE PRINCIPLE AND THE
THEORY BEHIND A PARTICULAR APPLICATION. JUST AS 2 + 4 EQUALS 6, IF
YOU DO UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLE AND THEORY, YOU WILL KNOW THAT 4 +
2, 3 + 3, 5 + 1, ETC. ALSO EQUALS 6.
My friend of mine who is
also a JKD student said true Muay Thai kick boxers had pretty
powerful kicks and steel like shins and that your techniques would
not work against. I am just wondering does your technique work
against them?
WHAT MAKES THESE FIGHTERS SO FORMIDIBLE IS NOT
THEIR KICK, BUT THEIR EXPERIENCE AND TIMING. WING CHUN DOES NOT
MERELY STOP THE KICK, IT HAS COUNTERATTACKS IN WHICH WE KICK BACK,
COVERING AT THE SAME TIME.
